Lunch was not Aldricks favorite part of the day. Not by a long shot. He ate alone, by choice. Aldrick did have friends. They were girls. And they weren't here. Lunch was his time to do things he didn't have time for later in the day. Like certain homeworks. Or homework that was too easy to wait to do.
Like some of his herbology homework. Divination was mostly in class work. On occasion they had to write a paper. Not right now though. He just had some simple things to write about the poisonous plants they were working on. Simple. He'd spent enough time in his life working on poisonous plants to know the basics.
So, drink in one hand, quill in the other, Aldrick worked mindlessly on the paper in front of him.

Emma didn't hate lunch. She had friends enough to have someone to sit by when they were around and when they weren't it was really no big deal. She always had homework to do or books to read. Today her friends were missing. She thought maybe Valentine would be around but she was sure she was down sticking her head in the lake or something. She'd make her eat later. She took her lunch, a salad -not as ironic as you think- ready to find herself a table by herself.
That was the plan; nice, simple, and definitely not exciting. At least, it was, until she spotted a very distinct set of dreads sitting at his own table. Alone. Emma had seen him before, Aldrick Montag, Professor Suzuki's prized student, when it came to poisonous and dangerous plants at least. Already a very avid Herbology majour, Emma had asked her professor about the hybrids she had been talking about one day after class and the boy who was working on them. She explained the plans Aldrick had for a very beautiful deadly plant and the little blonde had been pinging about it ever since. She was sure her dormmate, Valentine, was sick of hearing his name by now. Of course, she had seen him before, leaving the classroom or just around the school but she had never actually had the time to talk to him. Until now.
"You're Aldrick Montag, right?"
Thick Irish accent all but mutilating his name, she slid into the seat across from him. No, she didn't ask.

Had he recognized the voice he probably would have looked up. But he didn't. He was busy doing work. Not too hard of work, mind you, but work none the less.
And he didn't really know many irish people. Or at least, not ones whose accent was that thick.
"Who is asking?"
A moment or so later he finally looked up, quirking an eyebrow at the girl. He was sure he'd seen her somewhere. But he didn't really care where. The point was, this girl he didn't know had seated herself at his table and was talking to him. Why?

Why? Because he was BRILLIANT. That was why.
Emma did have a thick accent. It wasn't really her fault, it was just where she was from. She wouldn't say her family was poor but they weren't really from the greatest part of the country. She loved it, though, and no one could make her feel bad about it.
And as for Aldrick's accent? It was so sososo cool. So much cooler than she even thought it would be!
"I'm Emma, Emma Gairden, Professor Suzuki told me all about you!"
She may have been talking to fast and staring too hard but she didn't notice. He was looking at her. Nothing was more important than that.

. . .
Aldrick quirked an eyebrow at the girl. Emma, apparently. Emma Gairden. Who knew him how? Professor Suzuki, apparently. Who just went down about five points in his book.
"She did? And why?"
He wasn't being hostile. He wasn't being friendly either. This girl had come to his table. He didn't need to be hospitable.

No, he didn't need to be. He could probably cuss her out and insult her accent and she would just keep staring the way she was. He was an upperclassmen and absolutely genius with plants.
"She was telling me about the hybrids you were working on. Like your new one with the teacup rose. I just had to talk to you."

"Oh."
So she was talking about him to students, apparently. Flattering and all, but unnecessary. At least it was that and not other things. Not that there are other things she could talk about. She didn't know that many things about him.
"Why did you have to talk to me?"

She blinked, staring at him like he was crazy. Why? Why did she have o talk to him? Really? How could she not?! But, she supposed to could explain a little; as best she could.
"I'm an Herbology majour and... you're like the best! All the other upperclassmen are just doing the boring, normal stuff. Just trying to get grades."
Not that there were that many Herbology majours.
"But you're doing things they wouldn't even dream of while still in school!"

There were enough Herbology majours. Not many that really wanted to do anything other than
"I'm sure I am the best."
He shrugged, taking a sip of his drink.
"But I don't see what's so special. I'm just doing what I feel like."
Ego boosts were nice though.

And he didn't even care. How cool.
Her salad sat untouched in front of her. She couldn't think about eating right now.
"And that's what's so awesome!"
Her eyes widened, a thought striking her.
"Are you doing anything new right now?"

. . .
This girl was enthusiastic. That was obvious.
"I'm doing homework."
He was sure she meant in general, not the immediate moment. But he was a smartass.

...
She'd take that.
Leaning forward a bit, her eyes dropped to his homework, then looked back at him.
"Herbology homework? Which class?"

"Dangerous plants."
With that he turned his attention back down to the paper. She'd have to say things that were a bit more interesting to hold his attention.

Oh, she wasn't nearly finished yet.
"Devil's Snare and Other Dark Plants?"
There was a hint of awe in her voice, as with everything else.
"I heard that's a dangerous class and really hard."
Heh.
"But I'm sure it's no problem for you."

He shrugged a bit, scratching something onto the paper before looking up at her again.
"It's not too hard."
. . .
Another shrug.
"Maybe dangerous. If you're stupid."
